Bob Keech

Bob Keech, good friend, "gone west"

Great pilot, storyteller, friend and EAA member ( also past-president) has passed from our presence. Bob will be missed by all but not forgotten. Story time at each chapter meeting will be called "Bob Keech Time" in honor of this wonderful person. See the Ithaca Journal Obituary here.

Here is the member newsletter from our last meeting on January 26th. Plan to attend our banquet next month!

Varna Community Center

The Immediate Next Meeting will be the February Banquet Meeting!

The banquet meeting will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Varna Community Center. Gathering will be at 6:00 PM with dinner served at 6:30PM. Meal choices include Broiled Haddock, Baked Chicken and Prime Rib of Beef. If we have at least 40 attendees the cost will be $20 per person.

The program speaker will speak on “GREEN AIR” - or flying from the standpoint of a glider pilot. With this mailing, through copies to David St. George and to our own Tim Fallon, we specifically wish to invite any and all members of the East Hill Flying Club who might care to attend the banquet. Art Muka, 113 Kay St., Ithaca, 607-257-2016 or <aam6@cornell.edu> MUST KNOW by Feb 22 at the latest if you plan to attend. He also must know how many there will be in your party and what their meal choices are. Art will collect the meal fees at any time up to and including the evening of the banquet.

The SHow with CarolAnn Garratt

CarolAnn Garratt: EAA 811 Show

Carol Ann Garratt gave a wonderful talk on flying around the world in her stock Mooney 201 (Thanks to Pete DeGraf). In December 2008, with Carol Foy, she set a world speed record of 156 hours (only 46 on the ground). The planning and execution of this flight were amazingly detailed and safety oriented. 60-70 people showed up to watch the show.

The impetus for both flights was to raise funds for the ALS Therapy Development Institute and to honor Carol Ann's mother who died of ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease). Thanks to Tom Weber of East Hill for "instant sound reinforcement!" and Lee White for transporting all the chairs (again!)

EAA 811 Young Eagles May 9th, 2009: Lots of Happy Kids!!

Elizabeth flyingWe had a great day flying at our Young Eagles Rally. The weather was mostly cooperative and we flew about 85 young people for their first time. You have to be there to fully understand the happiness and excitement this brings to these kids. There are now many Young Eagle Certificates tacked to bedrooms walls all around town and new dreams about flying planes and helicopters!

Thanks to all the members of EAA 811 and East Hill and that flew or helped out at the learning stations or on the ramp. The coordination and set-up was superb this year. The food from Wings Over Ithaca was also very good. There were many smiles all around and we made lots of friends in our community. Thank-you also to Doug Lewis and Ithaca ATC for their fantastic support through-out this event and to Taughannock Aviation for the $.30 a gallon fuel discount and waiving the landing fees. Thanks also to Laura Jones and the other CAP people that provided excellent support with parking.

EAA member pilots from both organizations will be offering free airplane
rides to kids between the ages of 8 and 17 years old. These pilots volunteer
their airplane and time as part of the Young Eagles program, a program designed
to stir interest in aviation among the younger generation.

1.4 million kids world-wide have been flown since the inception of the Young
Eagles program just over ten years ago. See this link!
